国連本部で開催されている「気候変動サミット」に参加演説した、スウェーデンのグレタ・トゥンベリさんの演説内容から、ぜひ、ネイティブがよく使う覚えておくと役に立つ重要な英語表現をまとめてみました。
まずは、国連での演説をYouTubeで聞いてみよう。聞き取れるからどうかのチェック！
Greta Thunberg 国連演説のスクリプト
YouTubeで聞いた演説の内容を実際のスクリプトと比較して、聞き取れにくかった箇所を再度聞き返してみよう。
“My message is that we’ll be watching you.
“This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!
“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you !
“For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you’re doing enough, when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.
“You say you hear us and that you understand the urgency. But no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that. Because if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act, then you would be evil. And that I refuse to believe.
“The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50% chance of staying below 1.5 degrees [Celsius], and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.
“Fifty percent may be acceptable to you. But those numbers do not include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution or the aspects of equity and climate justice. They also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist.
“So a 50% risk is simply not acceptable to us — we who have to live with the consequences.
“To have a 67% chance of staying below a 1.5 degrees global temperature rise – the best odds given by the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] – the world had 420 gigatons of CO2 left to emit back on Jan. 1st, 2018. Today that figure is already down to less than 350 gigatons.
“How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just ‘business as usual‘ and some technical solutions? With today’s emissions levels, that remaining CO2 budget will be entirely gone within less than 8 1/2 years.
“There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today, because these numbers are too uncomfortable. And you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.
“You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you.
“We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.
“Thank you.”

ネイティブもよく使う覚えて役に立つフレーズ
【I shouldn’t be up here】
I shouldn’t be up here. → 私がここにいるべきではない。
実務的なビジネス場面でも多用する。
I should not be + 動詞の進行形でで使用する場合が結構多い。 → ～する立場（べき）にない。
I shouldn’t be doing this. → これをする立場にない。（けど、やっている。なぜなら、やるヒトがいないから。）
【on the other side of】
単純に反対側という意味ですが、ビジネスでは、味方なのか敵なのかを表現する場合にも使用。
Are you on the other side of the table ? → テーブルの反対側にいるのか？（敵なのか？）
You should be sitting right next to me. → 隣に座るべきだろう。（味方になるべき。）
【How dare you】
Howには動詞と助動詞がある。
動詞：助動詞用法と同様
→ あえて[思い切って・勇気を持って・生意気にも]…する
助動詞：否定・疑問で使用
→ あえて[思い切って・勇気を持って・生意気にも]…する
今回の演説は慣用句を使用
How dare you ：（慣用句）
→ よくも図々しく～できるな

【People are suffering. People are dying】
プレゼンテーションや政治家の演説でよく使用される手法。
文の形を一致させて、「韻」を踏ませる。多くの場合は、3つの文を並べて相手を引き込む。今回のように、文ごとで表現する場合と、
People are suffering, dying and ○○○ing. などのような、表現手法もされる。基本的には、3語が基本。
基本的には聴衆を引き寄せる際に用いられる表現手法。
【crystal clear】
Crystal clear : 「明確」・「明瞭」であることを強調する際の表現。理解したかどうか、という場面でも使用することはあるが、ビジネスでは前者で使うことの方が多い。
Is that clear ? → 理解できた？ 返答：Yes または、Crystal と回答する場合もあります。
【 no matter how】
→ どんなに（いかに）…しても
類似表現
no matter what … →たとえ～が… でも
no matter which … →たとえ、どれが… でも
no matter who … →たとえ、だれが… でも
no matter where … →たとえ、どこが… でも
no matter when … →たとえ、いつ… でも

ビジネスでもよく使います。頼んだ仕事のアウトプットの品質が低い場合など。

Give the odds ：有利な条件を与える
受動態表現にして、有利な条件を与えたとしても… ； 或いは、よく見たとしても
【business as usual】
頭文字をとってBAUと表記
As usual：いつものように
ビジネスでいつものように→ 普段と変わらずに
【presented in line】
この場合の、line はスタートラインのこと。つまり、「すぐさま提案できる 解決策のがない」という文脈。
→ すぐに提案できる
【if you choose to fail us】
Fail には、自動詞と他動詞があり、この場合他動詞の「失望させる＝disappoint」の意。
注意：「選ぶ」→ choose; select; pick; elect; prefer の英単語があります。
Choose は適当に選ぶ
Select や pickは慎重に選ぶ
Prefer は好みで選ぶ
Elect は正式に選ぶ
【draw the line】
Draw the (a) line：境界線を引く
ビジネス世界ではよく使用。お互いの立位置をはっきりさせるときに使用する。

１６歳の少女の国連での演説。時間的にみれば、わずかに、4分弱。内容は非常に濃い。
４分ほどのスピーチのなかで使用されている表現はどれも難しいものではありません。
ぜひ、一度、グレタ・トゥンベリさんになったつもりで完コピしてみてください。練習をすると、使われている英語の表現が驚くほど身近に感じられ、自分でも使えるような気になります。
